City People Rule Over Country People

We all know about red and blue states and have seen the maps. When red and blue is broken down by county, the United States of America is almost entirely red.   Obama won 52% of the states, 51.4% of the popular vote and, incredibly, only 20% of the counties.  See for yourself:

The Disenfranchisement of Rural America by James Huffman
The Hoover Institute article gives the detail and shows a standard Red-Blue state map and a second version which stretches the size of a state to reflect its population.  By population, it looks fair but in each contest, city folk with blue values bumped country folk with red values. What the heck is it about cities that makes them attractive to live in but induces their citizens to support interventionist, debt-loving big government?
