This Stratfor.com video of strategic giants Robert Kaplan and George Friedman debating taught me how to think about China's power. China has secured its land borders but island chains of American allies bar the openings to the seas of world trade. Taiwan, like an unsinkable aircraft carrier, is parked at the largest outlet to open ocean. Myanmar will be a corridor for pipelines and goods from the Indian Ocean, bypassing the bottleneck straits of Malacca. China and the US have legitimate tensions but unlike the cold war with Russia, the countries have enough interdependent trade to rule out hot warfare. The US has more options about where to buy than China has about where to sell. Kaplan and Friedman are two warriors who spar with respect and skill.
