Canada has a unique tie to Beirut. In 1917, port-side Halifax was destroyed when a munitions ship caught fire after a collision and twenty minutes later blew up. Almost 2000 died, 9000 more were injured, 2 square kilometers of Halifax were leveled and windows broke up to 80 kilometers away. Until Hiroshima, this was mankind's largest ever explosion.
