Chart of US job openings, quits and hires tells a story

First surprise:  Layoffs are nearly steady over the last ten years with a gentle decline.
Second:  People who quit are usually replaced.  ( Purple line tracks Blue bars well). People who have a job are much less likely to quit nowadays.
Third:  The total of job openings has gone down, way down.  
It seems that businesses aren't shuttering so much as employers are finding ways to increase productivity without hiring new people.
